“The Early Bird gets the Worm!”
Good morning. I want to welcome you back to my blog. I have entitled it “RealRhetoric”. I plan to engage us in conversation or just thoughts. It may be spiritual, enlightening, challenging, uplifting or just words! I encourage you to like these post and follow me on my new website: www.michaeloyedokun.org.
My son is now in the 8th Grade and today is his first day of football practice. The 8th graders practice in the morning so he has to be there at 7:00 am on the dot. This will be both a challenge for him and for me. Neither of us are morning people. Especially after I went to bed at 4:30 am this morning after being on the computer all night.
As I was thinking what do I blog about my mind said, “The early bird gets the worm!” But as I often do with scripture I began to exegete this statement. So I have a few questions for whoever the author of this quote is:
(1) Who is this “early bird”? Is it the actual name of a bird or is it describing the characteristics of a particular bird? Is it early because this particular bird gets up before everyone else or does it just get up early?
(2) Was getting up early “intentional”? Did they have to get up early or did this bird just know that in order to “get” the worm the best time was early.
(3) I have so many questions concerning the worm. Is it only one worm that is to “get got”? Are there many worms, which increases the chances of getting a worm in case I miss the “early”? Is the worm even worth getting up early for or is it just an average worm?
(4) I am assuming that because history has preceded this that the worm is for nourishment and food consumption. Is the worm the only option? Are there any other items on the buffet that can be “got” at a later time for those who are not “early” persons?
I think these are enough questions for now that will intrigue us for a while. If I was to take a stab at the moral of this quote it would be this: Those who are intentional on getting up early and getting your day started have a greater opportunity to reach your daily goals and complete your task. Also, those that get up early will have a better opportunity to get “the best” because the best normally goes first and those at the last gets the scraps.
Matthew 20:16 states, ” So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen.”
God has the power to give us what He blesses us with regardless of who is first or last. He does want us to not wait until the end to get it right with Him but when we acknowledge that we need a Savior the time is right to “get the worm” of salvation and live out the rest of your days in worship and work for the Kingdom of God.
In the words of the group “Outkast”…you need to get up, get out and do something…don’t let the days of your life pass by!
